September 19, 2024The Peck Foray is back! Happening October 4-6 near Albany
September 24, 2024Just in time for Halloween and Día de los Muertos: let’s meet up at Greenwood Cemetery for a discussion of the eerie, unsettling, The Extinction of Irena Rey by Jennifer Croft. Selected by writer, educator, independent scholar, and club member Katina Rogers, she will also lead the discussion on Sat. 10/19, 3-5pm. Some of you may remember that Katina led our inaugural Myco book club event of Tsing’s Mushroom at the End of the World back in May 2023, so we are very happy to welcome her back for what promises to be another fascinating discussion.
For those who are limited in time or intimidated by full-length reads, we are only discussing the first 50 pages which include:
* Epigraph
* Warning: A Note from the Translator
* Chapters 1-5
(You can preview the first 34 pages on Google Books.)
To round out the fungal and Dia de los Muertos themes, we invite you to take out huitlacoche (corn smut or corn “truffle”) tacos from Chilo’s (across the street from Greenwood) for our discussion. In case of inclement weather, we will shift our meeting indoors to Chilo’s. Artisanal gluten-free vegetarian mushroom desserts by an NYMS member chef will also be available for purchase. Spots are limited so RSVP here and email Maya Han at culture@newyorkmyc.org if questions.
N.B. For those who want both a walk and talk, conveniently, we also have a separate NYMS walk scheduled for Greenwood from 10-2pm !
