NEW YORK MYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
2024 was a another busy year for New York Mycological Society – over 40 walks and ID meetings, over a dozen lectures, a book club, workshops, many community and cultural events, several dinner adventures, three gorgeous newsletters and the list goes on.
Did you know that all this goodness was brought to you by a tiny crew of hardworking, unpaid superhero volunteers? And yes, it can be a lot. We need more members like you to jump in, roll up your sleeves, and add your magic to the mix. We’re scouting for fresh faces and spirited souls to join the team. And yes we’re looking at you — we need your skills and enthusiasm!
This section on our website that lists all the different ways to get your hands dirty (literally and figuratively) with the club. These are not one-off opportunities (there will be some of those throughout the year) but chances to steer a project close to our hearts longer term.

NYMS Partnership Event Representative
Minimum commitment: Six months
Experience required: Familiarity with NYMS’ mission and values, passion for community outreach, some knowledge of fungal biology and common species.
What the job involves:
Represent NYMS at partnership events, either by co-hosting a table or co-lead a walk .
What the position has to offer:You will get to interact with partner organizations and the general public and gain experience representing the club.
Walk Leader
Minimum commitment: Two walks a year or more
Experience required: Familiarity with a park NYMS visits and our typical walk routes
What the job involves:
Greeting members, taking photograph, explaining walk protocol, directing group, set the pace, ensure group stays together. Taxonomic expertise is not required - you will be accompanied by a member with taxonomic expertise
What the position has to offer:You will acquire or hone group leadership skills and meet many new and old members
Assistant Walk Leader
Minimum commitment: Six months
Experience required: Ability to use Google Maps, knowledge of a few common fungi
What the job involves:
Many members arrive to walks late and require directions. Your number will be on walk invites and people will call and text you for directions. You will send them a Google live link and otherwise direct them. You will also help organize the table at the end of a walk and help identify common fungi.
What the position has to offer:You will get to meet many members and learn how to explain common fungi to walk participants.
