The back features the following text:
Mary Elizabeth Banning (1822-1903) was a pioneering 19th century American mycologist. Self-taught, and one of the first and only women in her field, she identified 23 new species of fungi. Her magnum opus, Fungi of Maryland, contains 175 beautiful watercolor illustrations that significantly contributed to the then-burgeoning field of mycology. The mushroom Amanita banningiana was named posthumously in tribute to Banning, whose bold and spirited approach to the natural sciences continues to inspire today.
An NYMS exclusive – original artwork by member artist Lala and design by Maya Han. All proceeds support NYMS.
