Join us for a walk in Wolfe’s Pond Park, Prince’s Bay, Staten Island – Sunday, July 12th
This is our first official walk of the season. Since 2020, NYMS members have found Nigroporus vinosus in only a handful of New York City’s parks, including in Wolfe’s Pond. This attractive polypore, which previously had a distinctly southern distribution is expanding its range northward. It is easily recognized when fresh by its purplish-brown pore surface which bruises black when damaged.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will postpone or cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
This location is particularly buggy so you will want to be well protected by insect repellent.
