Join us for a pop-up walk in the Wolfe's Pond Park, Staten Island, Saturday, December 23rd at 9:30am!
Bring lunch, water and paper bags for collecting specimens. Bring your hand lens, a knife, a tackle box if you have one, and your keen senses.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you've never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
Take the 8:30 Staten Island ferry from Whitehall Street and then take the Staten Island Railway (SIR) which leaves at 9:01. It arrives at the Prince’s Bay station at 9:34 when the walk starts. The walk begins here, at the corner of Herbert Street and Holten Ave.
You might want to use the MTA trip planner to find a transit route that works best for you. And definitely check the MTA Service Alerts web page for last-minute transit changes. (The MTA currently says that there are boarding changes for SIR trains for Saturday, but this does not affect transit.)
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
We will have pop-up walks on most weekends until scheduled walks start again in July 2024. Pop-up walks are usually announced on Thursday mornings. Locations and dates are picked at short notice based on local conditions and walk leader availability.
If you are interested in leading or co-leading a pop-up walk please respond to this email. No taxonomic knowledge is required. The only prerequisite is familiarity with the club's walk route in a specific park.
Staten Island has not benefited as much from the recent rains, getting a mere 0.6 inches. We nonetheless hope to find at least a few summer […]
