June 21, 2024Fanny Angelina Hesse (born June 22 1850, died in 1934) changed the world but almost no one remembers her. Thanks to her we use agar (and its derivative, agarose) in the life sciences. Ironically, most people have heard the name of (Julius) Petri, and the namesake dishes where agar is poured into. Fanny met her German husband Walther in Brooklyn, where his brother worked as physician.
A diverse and distributed team of science communicators, illustrators, bioartists, artists, scientists, and historians we are telling this story with a graphic novel. They are looking for support via a Kickstarter project. Find out more here.
