Check out Eugenia Bone’s new book Have a Good Trip
December 6, 2024Calling all UI/UX designers and developers passionate about nature, fungi, and myxomycetes! We at the New York Mycological Society are building a new microsite on newyorkmyc.org, dedicated to making it easier for people to identify fungi and myxomycetes. This microsite will feature a typeahead lookup to help users quickly find and access keys and identification resources.
What We’re Working On
Our goal is to create an intuitive and visually engaging interface where users can effortlessly search for the exact resources they need. Whether you’re an expert mycologist or a curious enthusiast, this tool aims to streamline the identification process with relevant links and resources.
What We Need Help With
We’re looking for UI/UX assistance to refine the usability and design of this application. We have the core functionality in place but could use expert eyes and hands to make the experience smoother, more intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing.
How to Get Involved
Check out our code repository on GitHub for more details: https://github.com/newyorkmyc/keys-typeahead. We welcome anyone interested in helping refine the design and usability, and we’re especially keen to have a frontend developer dive in. A pull request to help elevate the project would be fantastic—if you’re comfortable working with modern frameworks, consider rebuilding it as a Single Page Application (SPA) using React or Vue.
Why Get Involved?
This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a project with a focus on education, conservation, and community involvement. By helping us with this microsite, you’ll be aiding mycology enthusiasts worldwide in exploring the fascinating world of fungi and myxomycetes.
Join us in bringing this project to life! Feel free to reach out via GitHub or contact us through the New York Mycological Society’s website. Together, we can make fungi and myxomycete identification an enjoyable, accessible experience for all.
Additionally, you can contribute by submitting links to keys! We’re maintaining a shared Google spreadsheet for this purpose. If you know of valuable identification keys that should be included, please add them here: Submit Links to Keys.
Special Thanks
A big thank you to Matthew Rozanoff for his contributions and support, which have been instrumental in getting this project off the ground!
