Urban Mycology: What we’re learning about the fungi in New York City parks
New York City’s parks host an extraordinary diversity of fungi – organisms that underpin soil health, nutrient cycling, tree vitality, and ecosystem resilience, yet are often overlooked by both visitors and stewards of our parks.
This talk introduces the fungal diversity of New York City parks and the long-running research efforts of the New York Mycological Society to document it. Drawing on nearly two decades of systematic field surveys, microscopy, and DNA sequencing, the presentation explores what fungi reveal about park ecosystems: which kinds of fungi occur in NYC parks, how species composition varies among parks, how climate and weather patterns influence fruiting, and which invasive species are of emerging concern. The talk will also highlight several notable species documented in New York City parks for the first time in 2025.
The presenters:
Ethan Crenson
Ethan is a long-time member and current president of the New York Mycological Society. He studied art and is a graphic designer. As an amateur mycologist, he has focused his efforts on understanding the Ascomycota, with a particular emphasis on pyrenomycetes – the ugly ducklings of the fungal kingdom.
Sigrid Jakob
Sigrid is a passionate amateur mycologist with a focus on documenting and identifying fungi through field observation, microscopy, and DNA sequencing. She specializes in fungi associated with herbivore dung. She has been collaborating on the descriptions of new species and produces NYMS’ annual research reports on fungal diversity in NYC parks. She serves on the board of FUNDIS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fungal conservation.
This webinar is part of the NYC Field Station’s Science of the Living City program, which aims to engage both natural resource professionals and the public in discussions related to the social, biological, and physical aspects of urban ecology, as well as quality of life in cities.
