Join us for a walk in Cunningham Park, Queens this Sunday, April 13th.
The spring can be cruel for mycophiles. We watch the flowers bloom and the trees leaf out, knowing that the mushrooms will be along, but not just yet. However, Cunningham Park (and nearby Alley Pond Park) are host to an early season ascomycete: the “false morel” Gyromitra korfii. The genus Gyromitra has recently undergone a revision so the species in question now goes by the name Maublancomyces korfii. The name doesn’t really roll off the tongue. Bragging rights and eternal gratitude to anyone who finds this mushroom on Sunday.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. The rain we expect to see on Saturday will likely be just ending as our walk begins on Sunday. Fingers crossed.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
