We return for our second visit to Stony Brook, Saturday August 16th. Stony Brook is located within Harriman State Park, NY. Last year on our walk in Stony Brook, Claviceps purpurea, the fungus which may have sparked the Salem Witch Trials and that certainly led to the development of LSD, was found at the trailhead on meadow fescue (Lolium pratense).
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will postpone or cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
This location is known to have ticks and mosquitos, so you will want to be well covered in insect repellent.
