
NYMS community partnership coordinator, herbalist, educator and forager Journei Bimwala will lead a special workshop entitled Forest Floor First Aid: Herbal Safety Skills for Mushroom Walkers on Saturday, June 27th in Van Cortlandt Park.

Place: Woodlawn station, the last stop on the #4 line
This workshop purpose is to prepare NYMS members for safe participation in mushroom walks and outdoor exploration by introducing foundational field safety awareness, herbal first aid principles, and environmental risk recognition.
The focus will be on
- Wound awareness and basic field care principles
- Bleeding response (direct pressure and stabilization concepts)
- Poison ivy and tick awareness
- Herbal plant allies for minor outdoor incidents
- Simple immobilization principles (sling demonstration)
- Field safety decision-making and when to seek help
- This session will also introduce key mushroom walk safety practices, including environmental awareness, common field hazards, and responsible observation in forest settings.
