Please join us for a very special in-person lecture at the Central Park Arsenal on Thursday September 26 at 6.30pm!

Alison Pollack presents From Macro to Micro: The Art of Mushroom Photography

Alison Pollack, one of the world’s best mushroom photographers, will describe her process for creating beautiful photos of mushrooms and Myxomycetes (slime molds).  She will describe her techniques for field work, as well as studio photography using extreme macro lenses and microscope objectives adapted to her camera.  She will share some of her photographs of mushrooms and slime molds from her home in Northern California, as well as from her travels around the world.  Alison’s favorite photography subjects are tiny fungi and myxos, some so small that you would not see them as you walk through the forest.  She will describe how she finds these tiny organisms, most only one or two millimeters tall, and how she photographs them. She will discuss all of the gear she uses, as well as some of her methods for shooting and photo editing.

Bring your photo and myxo-related questions for the Q+A! This lecture will appeal to anyone captivated by the beauty of fungi and slime molds, and to anyone seeking to improve their photography of these magical organisms.

Alison will also join us for the Saturday September 28th walk to the South Mountain Reservation.  There you can watch her process in the field and get some tips on mushroom photography.

Location

We’re back at the Central Park Arsenal – a beautiful building in Central Park with a welcoming team where we used to hold all our lectures. It has not been available to us because of its COVID-related closure but is now back open. It’s located at 830 5th Ave, New York, NY 10065, at the level of 64th Street on the East side of the park. It’s a short walk from the 5th Avenue and 59th Street N, R and W station or the 4, 5 and 6 train station at 59th Street. You can also easily get there by the N, Q, R and F trains at 63rd Street station.

About Alison Pollack

Alison Pollack is a macro and extreme macro photographer specializing in mushrooms and Myxomycetes (slime molds). Her passion is finding and photographing these beautiful organisms, especially the smaller ones, to bring awareness to the beauty that exists right at our feet as we walk through the forest. Her goal is to reveal these miniature beauties of the forest in a format that is as much art as science. Alison shares her photographs online where she has amassed a large and enthusiastic following from around the world. Her otherworldly images are captioned with information about her subjects, as well as technical details of her photography process. Alison’s photographs have been featured in dozens of print and online publications, including National Geographic, the Sunday New York Times, Der Spiegel, and Science Weekly.  For the past four years she has entered and has been awarded prizes in the prestigious Nikon Small World photography competition.
