Join us for a walk in Seton Falls Park, Bronx this Saturday, January 17th.
Seton Falls Park is small, 36 acres, and is bisected by Rattlesnake Brook. The brook flows out from under the city streets at the north end of the park, flows through the park, and then returns back underground at the south end of the park. The rattlesnakes which give the brook its name haven’t been seen in the area since the turn of the twentieth century. Local farmers employed feral pigs to wipe them out. What you could see in Seton Falls on Saturday is Mollisia aurantioviolascens, a species of ascomycete that has not been formally published, but that Sigrid Jakob has found twice in New York City—once in Seton Falls.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
