Join us for a walk in Long Pond Park, Staten Island this Sunday, July 5th.
This will be our first time visiting Long Pond Park since 2025 and only our second visit during the summer. On our last summertime visit, Craig Sloan found Sphaerostilbella berkeleyana, which was a first for the city at the time. S. berkeleyana is a bright purple ascomycete that parasitizes Stereum and some polypores.
Since there is a World Cup match on the day of this walk, please be aware that traffic and transit may be somewhat more delayed than usual.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. This walk is scheduled for Sunday in hopes that the heat wave will have ended and the predicted thunderstorms passed.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
Please be aware that ticks and mosquitos are very common in this park, so you will want to be prepared for those as well.
The event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event, please use the login form in the left sidebar.
We look forward to seeing you at the walk!
