Join us for a walk in High Rock Park, Staten Island this Saturday, February 21st.
Without knowing exactly what conditions on the ground will be for Saturday’s walk, I would anticipate slippery paths, mud, and a fair amount of leftover snow cover. High Rock park has some fairly steep inclines and marshy areas, so if you plan to come, please be prepared for all of that. We have visited High Rock Park in February on three previous occasions. On the most recent one in 2023, Misha Zitser found an ascomycete that was eventually identified as Fracchiaea callista (known as Cucurbitaria callista on iNat). However, a sequence of the collection does not align with validated sequences in GenBank. What could it be?
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
