Join us for a walk in Forest Park, Queens this Sunday, January 11th.
Forest Park has oak, hickory, beech, and tulip poplar trees. Some of the larger trees are over 150 years old. We tend to look for mushrooms in the eastern half between Metropolitan Avenue and the railroad tracks that bisect the park, though occasionally we have the stamina to make it to a grove of pines in the south central section. Perhaps we will make it there this Sunday.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
