Join us for a walk in Cunningham Park, Queens this Sunday, April 12th.
In the spring we eagerly await the arrival of morels. They’re not here yet. But the false morels, which usually arrive earlier, could be here this weekend. The false morels, or if you prefer a less disparaging name, the Lorchels, have recently undergone a rigorous study and reorganization. So the species we used to know as Gyromitra korfii, is now in a new genus Maublancomyces. M. korfii has been found on three previous occasions in NYC. In 2017 it was found in Cunningham Park.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
