Join us for a walk in Alley Pond Park, Queens this Sunday, April 27th.
Alley Pond is one of our favorite parks, but like all parks in the city is relatively dormant right for fungi now until the gilled mushroom season gets underway in early June. We are most likely to find jellies, lichens, crusts and tiny ascomycetes. This walk is being led by Andrew Cannon, the club’s expert on rusts, so expect to see some beautiful rusts as well.
These are the species we found last year at this location at the end of April.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
