Join us for a walk in High Rock Park, Staten Island, on Sunday, August 9th.
High Rock is part of the Staten Island Greenbelt and often has unusual fungi and slime molds. Last year, our slime mold expert, Elan Trybuch found Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa var. descendens, which had never been found in New York City.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will postpone or cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
This location is known to have a lot of ticks and mosquitoes so you will want to be well protected by insect repellent.
