Join us for a walk in High Rock Park, Staten Island, on Saturday, August 2nd. Note: the walk starts at 10am.
High Rock is a jewel in the Staten Island Greenbelt and also a hot spot for unusual mycorrhizal mushrooms. Incidentally, the cover mushroom for this walk (Gymnopus iocephalus—not a mycorrhizal mushroom) was photographed by Lala (sea_lemon) and won our 2024 photo contest and is now featured in the header of the NYMS web site.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will postpone or cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
This location is particularly buggy so you will want to be well covered in insect repellent.
