Joint walk with Long Island Mycological Club (LIMC) at Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve, Deer Park, NY – Saturday, November 14th.
Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve features a rare pitch pine/scrub oak barrens characterized by dense shrub thickets. This is an unusual barrens habitat which occurs in only three places on Long Island. It is considered a globally rare habitat. The barrens are interspersed with stands of bigtooth aspen and there are grasslands on the site as well.
Bring paper bags for collecting specimens, a hand lens, a knife, a tackle box (optional), water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do.
We highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here.
If you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before, here is what to expect.
Ticks and mosquitos are common in this park so you should take precautions against them.
