March 8, 2024Duke University has recently decided to close its herbarium, a collection of 825,000 specimens of plants, fungi and algae that was established more than a century ago. The collection, one of the largest and most diverse in the country, has helped scientists map the diversity of plant life and chronicle the impact of humans on the environment.
Herbaria and Fungaria are important in keeping a record of biodiversity. Herbarium specimens are the foundation of much scientific research and discovery.
Many organizations and individuals are protesting this decision, including the following
American Bryological and Lichenological Society (ABLS)
American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS)
American Society of Plant Taxonomists (ASPT)
Botanical Society of America (BSA)
Ecological Society of America (ESA)
Integrated Digitized Biocollections (iDigBio)

Society of Herbarium Curators (SHC)
