Please join us on Thursday, October 15, 2026, 7-9PM ET for a virtual discussion of the new book Tiny Gardens Everywhere by Kate Brown, an avid gardener, distinguished professor in the history of science at MIT and author of four previous prize-winning books, including Manual for Survival.

Tiny Gardens Everywhere traces three centuries of unlikely urban green spaces—from Paris Commune plots to Soviet allotments and migrant-tended orchards—where ordinary people, facing upheaval and scarcity, turned scraps of land into thriving sources of food, community, and quiet resistance.

This title is an expansion of the Myco Book Club’s thematic — while fungi are not explicitly the central character of this book, they are central participants and co-drivers in this social movement and larger ecological vision.

Hailed by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing — one of our Myco Book Club heroes (and the author of The Mushroom at the End of the World) — she praises Tiny Gardens for “[showing] us the path between the plot and the planet. It’s an amazing, beautiful book; I couldn’t put it down.”

This virtual discussion will be moderated by Maya Han and led by veteran mycophile and bibliophile Charlie Dibe. An NYMS member since 2009, Charlie had the good fortune of meeting Gary Lincoff and taking his courses at the New York Botanical Garden. When not foraging, foraying, and film producing, Charlie is a devoted community organizer and activist in the tenant rights / housing justice movement and the ongoing fight for healthcare as a member of ACT UP. He is committed to people-powered movements and reversing the enclosure of the commons.
