Former NYMS president, Sigrid Jakob, has coauthored a paper in the journal, Mycologia, entitled Six newly described Inocybaceae from North America. In it, six species of Inocybaceae from North America are described as new. Of the six new taxa, three are described in the genus Inocybe: Inocybe albofusca, Inocybe communis, and Inocybe lincoffii, which she named for Gary Lincoff. Gary was the club’s guiding spirit and beloved informal leader who not only wrote the definitive guide to North American mushrooms (the Audubon Guide) but spread the joy of mushrooms wherever he went.
During our latest pop-up walk in Cunningham Park last Sunday, Sigrid was able to find two of the aforementioned species Inocybe communis and Inocybe lincoffii. The latter mushroom is, as Sigrid says, “…mostly found in New York City’s lawns and green spaces and rarely elsewhere, so it seemed apt (to name it for Gary) — that species is a real New Yorker, as was Gary.”
