New zine Mushrooms & Friends 4 released by Phyllis Ma–NYMS member discount
July 23, 2025Other mushroom clubs typically only have walks three to four months a year. The New York Mycological Society offers walks almost every weekend, year round. This is quite a lot of work for the small band of unpaid volunteers who lead our walks and we’d love some help from members!
If you enjoy attending our walks consider giving back to the club by volunteering for one of these open assistant walk leader slots:
Sunday, September 21st, Hunter’s Island, Pelham Bay Park, Bronx
Sunday, September 28th, Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY
Sunday, October 19th, Clove Lakes Park, Staten Island, NY
Saturday, October 25th, Manitou Point Preserve, Putnam County, NY
Saturday, November 8th, Central Park (Gary’s Backyard walk)
What do assistant walk leaders do?
Your main job is to assist the walk leader, eg by welcoming members, handing out hand lenses and giving directions by text or phone to latecomers. You’ll also help with keeping the group together and with cleaning up if we are doing tables. You’re not expected to be an expert identifier, and you don’t have to be familiar with the parks we visit.
If you’re interested in becoming an assistant walk leader please drop a line to president@newyorkmyc.org with the specific walk you would like to assist for.
