Gabriela D’Elia from the Mid Hudson Mycological Association has (re)launched the effort to pass a bill establishing a state mushroom for New York. Though the NYMS and partner clubs were not successful generating energy around our initial effort to get a bill through the state legislature, there is more momentum now as several other states (Illinois, Utah, Colorado, Kentucky) have recently passed their own state mushroom bills. There will be a zoom meeting on 9/30 to discuss the new effort. More information provided by Gabriela is below.
New York has a long list of state symbols, but the fungal Kindom is left out.
Fungi are essential to New York’s forests, soils, waterways, and wildlife, yet they remain largely invisible in our public understanding of nature.
Perhaps you’ve heard of the campaign. After years of hard work it is being reinvigorated and we need YOUR help! We are forming a new NY State Mushroom Coalition Join us on 9/30 to learn about the campaign and how to get involved.
