Alexandra Kirlan

The History & Future of Mycorrhizal Fungi Cultivation
Presentation 12:30 (Stage 1)
About Alexa: Alexandra Kirlan is a citizen scientist and NYMS member. She has cultivated mushrooms in her home lab and is interested in fungal ecology and biochemistry. She is especially interested in fungi as potential democratizers of agriculture and medicine and for their underpinning roles in various ecosystems including cultivated spaces from agricultural fields to flower pots. She hopes to explore the idea of holding fungi as praxis, learning how best to support fungal populations, in turn supporting broader communities, and in in turn supporting ourselves.
Aishwarya Veerabahu

The Midas Mushroom: Ecology, Evolution, and Management of Invasive Golden Oyster Mushrooms
Presentation 1:15 (Stage 1)
Description: Golden oyster mushrooms (GOM; Pleurotus citrinopileatus) have become the new friendly neighborhood, easily found, edible mushroom- but are they friendly neighbors to local fungi? This talk will cover the origin story of golden oyster mushrooms (GOM), their ecological impacts, and my next projects exploring their evolution and management.
About Aishwarya: Aishwarya Veerabahu is a 3rd year Botany PhD candidate, studying fungal ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, advised by Dr. Anne Pringle, with a PhD minor in Life Science Communication, advised by Dr. Dominique Brossard. She is broadly interested in studying fungal biodiversity, drivers of diversity, cross-kingdom interactions, science communication, and science policy concerning fungi (or the lack thereof!). When she’s not doing science, she’s jamming out with her band.
Lorraine Cruz

Living in a Plastisphere
Presentation 2:00 (Stage 1)
Description: "Living in a Plastisphere" investigates how microbial communities that colonize and adapt to plastic, known as plastispheres, mirror human dependence on plastics and reveal how plastic is reshaping ecosystems at both micro and macro scales. The project examines how mycelia and bacteria collaborate to degrade synthetic plastics: fungi such as Pestalotiopsis microspora metabolize plastic in oxygen-limited environments, while bacteria like Ideonella sakaiensis secrete PETase enzymes that break it into monomers. By examining how these organisms collaborate to break down synthetic plastics, the project rethinks cycles of waste and asks how these processes might inspire alternatives to single-use manufacturing and extractive production.
About Lorraine: Lorraine Cruz is a multidisciplinary researcher, maker, and designer born in the Dominican Republic and based in New York City. They recently earned an MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design, where their thesis focused on a relational-material investigation into mycelia and bioplastics, and they're currently an artist in residence at Genspace. Their work explores the intersections of decolonial thought, material inquiry, and the relationship between human and more-than-human systems.
Aubrey Carter

Burn Mushrooms of the Northeast
Presentation 12:45 (Stage 2)

Community Mapping the Mycelial Underground
Presentation 11:45 (Stage 1)
Description: We plan to present a talk on our efforts to leverage community science to map soil fungi in New York. This session will start with a brief introduction to our local soil and mycorrhizal fungi, why they matter, and why we want to get to know them. From there, we will share about our experience mobilizing community members to sample soil, which we subsequently analyzed for fungal DNA and heavy metal contamination. The talk will summarize what we learned from our first pilot dig in Brower Park, Crown Heights in the spring of 2025.
About Whitney and Lauren: Whitney Bauck and Lauren Wilson are friends, neighbors, and dirt and fungi lovers living in Crown Heights. Lauren is a nature writer and nonprofit fundraiser who helped create the first-ever map of Manhattan’s coastal soils. Whitney is a journalist who covers climate change and environmental justice for publications like the Guardian and Atmos and is a member of the New York Mycological Society.
Bruce Trigg

Mushrooms and Poisons
Presentation 2:15 (Stage 2)
Description: My talk is for people new to mycology as well as people with more experience. It's a lecture format but very informal with stories from my personal experience and from others. I try to avoid medical and myco jargon and will seek to clarify everything. I first review the basic rules for safely consuming mushrooms, discuss the classes of mushroom toxins and show examples of the mushrooms in each category, and discuss the types of gastroenteritis poisonings. Also a mention of concerns with AI related to misidentification of mushrooms. I use a powerpoint presentation and hopefully will have some specimens for a hands on demo.
About Bruce: I'm a retired public health physician and was the mushroom toxicology consultant for about a decade for the NM Poison Control Center. I've given two presentations on mushroom toxicity at New Mexico Mycological Forays (2023 and 2025).
Hector Prudhomme

Rooting the Future: Mycorrhizal Fungi, Farming, and Climate Change
Presentation 1:30 (Stage 2)
Description: My talk will explain the two main types of mycorrhizal fungi, Arbuscular mycorrhizae and Ectomycorrhizae that form symbiotic relationships with the roots of plants. Give an overview of their role in plant nutrition, and how that contributes to 1) resilience in forests and cropland 2) their importance in carbon sequestration. I will highlight some of the key discoveries and research that led to our present understanding. Finally, I will give a walkthrough of the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN) new Underground Atlas, that illustrates where biodiversity hotspots exist globally and the need to protect Mycorrhizae and their ecosystems. https://www.spun.earth/underground-atlas/mycorrhizal-biodiversity
This talk will be a followup to my article in the summer 2025 NYMS newsletter.About Hector: I am a citizen scientist, mycology hobbyist, and artist. I got interested in foraging, mushroom hunting, and fermentation (using yeasts) during the pandemic. But joining NYMS in 2022 and learning from people like Sigrid Jacob, Ethan Crenson, and Tom Bigelow among others opened my eyes to the smaller niche fungi that make mycology so endlessly fascinating. Mycology as an interdisciplinary study combines a lot of my interests. As an artist I enjoy looking at all the amazing patterns and colors fungi create. As a scientist I am inspired by how these often-tiny organisms have big impacts on their surrounding ecosystems.

The Interbeing Project

Shroomscape, the Original Mycelium Mindset Board Game
Workshop
Shroomscpae Game - 12, 1 and 2PM
FULL
Description: Come play The Interbeing Project's Shroomscape is The IBP’s original mycelium-mindset board game. We use Shroomscape as a space to invite collaboration, competition, and play between mycelium, humans, and slime mold! By doing so, the project seeks to interrogate rigid, anthropocentric boundaries around notions of intelligence and agency, by enveloping the human within the term ‘interspecies,’ while exploring the ways in which a multiplicity of species experience intra-action and play.
We will be running up to 8 rounds of the game at a time, with four player slots (with the option to play either individually or as a pair) at each game. Each round will last about an hour and we will run sessions throughout the festival in the Shroomscape booth.
We recommend signing up for a slot before the event to reserve your place! Please do so individually or as a pair - fill out the Eventbrite registration a single time either case. We will be playing on picnic blankets with a few tables - if you are in need of accommodation please indicate this on the Eventbrite.
About The Interbeing Project: The Interbeing Project is an exploration into ways of becoming with each other [co-becoming] in a shared world, through a series of relational entanglements that blur and question boundaries between beings [such as species boundaries]. Drawing from artistic, scientific and subjective knowledge practices, our research asks how humans may embody a shift in consciousness that might sustain these dynamic networks and evolve an exchange between inter-being ways of knowing and being.

It was the culmination of a popular class on mushroom identification John had been teaching at The New School from 1959 onward.
John Cage was committed to the principles of anarchy and his rules for the Society were simple: there are no rules.
The other guidance he gave to the club was “All that is necessary is an annual program of lectures and walks and a banquet. Hopefully we will all more or less reap the benefits which include more experience and knowledge of mushrooms, pleasant hours and days in the woods and fields away from concrete and metropolitan air and the society of people who spend their working hours in a great variety of ways. (I get, for instance, to be with people who aren’t composers of experimental music, and this is refreshing.)” Learning, and the enjoyment of nature with a community of people from all walks of life continue to be at the center of the club’s activities today.

Cam's Urban Farm

Fresh Mushrooms and Extracts
All day (mushroom vendor)
About Cam's Urban Farm: My name is Cam, and I run a specialty mushroom farm in Long Island City, Queens called Cam's Urban Farm. I've been fascinated by mushrooms for my entire life, and after getting laid off in 2022 during COVID, I made the leap to start a mushroom business. I grow a variety of mushrooms for restaurants and consumers in the NYC area and also make functional mushroom extracts with the lion's mane, cordyceps, and reishi I grow. I'm also a keen forager, and enjoy collecting local mushroom strains, cloning them, and growing them at my farm.
