SUMMARY:Join us 10.15 for (Virtual) Myco Book Club !
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, October 15\, 2026\, 7-9PM ET for a virtual discussion of the new book Tiny Gardens Everywhere by Kate Brown\, an avid gardener\, distinguished professor in the history of science at MIT and author of four previous prize-winning books\, including Manual for Survival. \nTiny Gardens Everywhere traces three centuries of unlikely urban green spaces—from Paris Commune plots to Soviet allotments and migrant-tended orchards—where ordinary people\, facing upheaval and scarcity\, turned scraps of land into thriving sources of food\, community\, and quiet resistance. \nThis title is an expansion of the Myco Book Club’s thematic — while fungi are not explicitly the central character of this book\, they are central participants and co-drivers in this social movement and larger ecological vision. \nHailed by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing — one of our Myco Book Club heroes (and the author of The Mushroom at the End of the World) — she praises Tiny Gardens for “[showing] us the path between the plot and the planet. It’s an amazing\, beautiful book; I couldn’t put it down.” \nThis virtual discussion will be moderated by Maya Han and led by veteran mycophile and bibliophile Charlie Dibe. An NYMS member since 2009\, Charlie had the good fortune of meeting Gary Lincoff and taking his courses at the New York Botanical Garden. When not foraging\, foraying\, and film producing\, Charlie is a devoted community organizer and activist in the tenant rights / housing justice movement and the ongoing fight for healthcare as a member of ACT UP. He is committed to people-powered movements and reversing the enclosure of the commons. \nDon’t miss this exciting conversation! Please RSVP to NYMS Culture / Maya Han at culture@newyorkmyc.org to receive the Zoom link. \nRead more about the book here and buy it from one of these fabulous local booksellers here.

SUMMARY:Clove Lakes Park\, Staten Island\, NY on Saturday\, October 17th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Clove Lakes Park\, Staten Island on Saturday\, October 17th. Clove Lakes can be hit or miss. On one visit in October of 2023 we found at least four (1\, 2\, 3\, 4) distinct species of Cortinarius\, all quite close to one another. But in dry seasons Clove Lakes can be a bit disappointing. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nTicks and mosquitos are common in this park so you will want to be prepared for those as well. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!
