SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday\, June 15th
DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Monday\, June 15th\, from 6.30 to 8.30 at Ethan Crenson’s house. Attendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nIn person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nThere will be microscopes and lots of mushroom books. In person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and chck out what others have found. \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!

SUMMARY:Join us for a meeting to launch NEST—the Northeast Sequencing Team
DESCRIPTION:Coming on Thursday\, June 18th at 7PM the NYMS will launch a study/working group called NEST—Northeast Sequencing Team. NEST aims to further in-depth research into groups of understudied mushrooms native to New York City and the surrounding area. The group will collect target species of mushrooms and fungi\, complete high quality macro and microscopic observations of them\, and sequence their DNA. You do not need to have previous experience in microscopy or sequencing to join NEST (though it will be quite valuable if you do). The group will meet periodically on Zoom to discuss projects\, techniques and results. NEST is led by Matthew Rozanoff. \nThe first meeting of NEST where we will introduce the concept and choose areas of study will be on: \nThursday June 18th at 7PM. Please RSVP if you would like to join. Or just attend the meeting using the Zoom link below. It’s okay to lurk if you’re not sure. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\n

SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Alley Pond Park\, Queens\, Saturday\, June 20th—different start location
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Alley Pond Park\, Queens this Saturday\, June 20th. Note that this walk will start at a different location than usual. \nOur walk is in collaboration with the Alley Pond Environmental Center\, an organization dedicated to educating children and adults in the New York metropolitan area\, protecting and preserving Alley Pond Park\, open spaces and waterbodies\, and advocating for sustainable environmental policies and practices. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!

SUMMARY:Join NYMS at MoMI Sat. 6/20 for Signal from the Soil: A Day of Mycelium\, Sound & Story
DESCRIPTION:Signal from the Soil: A Day of Mycelium\, Sound + Story\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMuseum of the Moving Image\, Queens NY | Saturday\, Jun 20\, 2026 at 1:00-4:00 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBio-sonification artist and musician Skooby Laposky translates the subtle electrical activity of mushrooms into immersive sound\, revealing a hidden sonic ecology within living systems. This performance includes live sounds of mycelial networks\, and is followed by a conversation between the artist and chemical engineer Jacob Belding\, of CROPPS\, a multi-institutional\, NSF-funded research center based at Cornell University. Belding gives us the chemistry foundations that fuel Laposky’s ability to amplify plant activity\, and tells us more about the research into plant signaling and communication\, and how this knowledge leads to better success for food crops.   \nIn MoMI’s Kaufman Courtyard\, hands-on listening stations let you amplify mushroom sounds for yourself to hear more from fungi’s inner signals.   \nNYC greenspace stewards Big ReUse offers composting tips. Bronx urban farm Mi Oh My Farms kicks off the day with a culinary mushroom grow-bag workshop; exploring the intersection of microbiology\, environmental stewardship\, and food cultivation. Participants will create their own mushroom kits by combining fermented coffee grounds with hydrated cardboard and mushroom spores to cultivate gourmet fungi at home.   \nLimited space is available for these programs; RSVP is recommended.   \nSchedule of Activities  \n1:00–2:00 p.m. Edible Mushroom Growing Workshop with Mi Oh My Farms – RSVP here \n1:00–5:00 p.m. Fungi Fellowship (Courtyard)  \n\nMushroom Listening Stations\nBigReUse composting info\nMi Oh My Farms on mushroom growing\n\n1:00–5:00 p.m. Happy Hour in the Cafe! 10% off beer\, wine\, and cocktails for Signal from the Soil ticket holders   \n2:30–4:00 p.m. Plant Sonification performance by Skooby Laposky\, followed by a conversation with chemical engineer Jacob Belding about plant signaling (Bartos) – RSVP here \nFree with museum admission. Seating is first come\, first served. \nPart of Open Worlds 2026 and Open Worlds: Science. Presented in partnership with New York Mycological Society. Email Maya Han at culture@newyorkmyc.org if questions.
