SUMMARY:Beginning Microscopy Workshop - the Microscope Demystified
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a workshop to introduce our members to the compound microscope. We hope to have ten microscopes\, supplies\, dried and fresh material to examine\, and a number of our experienced microscopists to help the students along. \nVery often the prospect of taking up a new technical challenge can be daunting. The purpose of this workshop is to get the prospective microscopist over the proverbial hump. \nThe class will cover optics and the mechanical workings of the microscope and the preparation of specimens for examination. Depending on what’s available\, the class may provide slime molds\, agarics\, ascomycetes\, and/or some polypores for study. \nThere is no admission fee\, however\, some chemistry and other resources will be available as a kit for purchase at the end of the class. Space is limited and these workshops tend to fill up very quickly. Non-members are invited to register for this workshop. Non-members should email president@newyorkmyc.org to secure a spot in the workshop or waiting list. \nIf you have your own microscope that you can bring to the workshop\, or have any questions please contact Ethan Crenson: president@newyorkmyc.org. \nDate/time:\nSaturday\, May 16\, 9:30am – noon \nWorkshop Location:\nthe Seahorse Classroom\nPier 57\n25 11th Avenue\nwest of 11th Avenue near W 15th Street \nTo reserve your seat for the workshop:\nUse the ticketing pane below. The workshop is free and open to the public\, but some supplies may be available for purchase on site. If you register and later find you cannot attend the workshop\, you are responsible for cancelling your reservation. \nCancellations: If\, after you have made a reservation\, you are unable to attend for any reason\, please cancel your reservation so that we can offer your seat to another member. \nWaiting list: Should the event become fully booked\, you can add your name to the waiting list by emailing president@newyorkmyc.org. If a vacancy becomes available you will be notified by email.

SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Clove Lakes Park\, Staten Island\, Sunday\, May 17th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Clove Lakes Park\, Staten Island this Sunday\, May 17th.    \nWe haven’t visited Clove Lakes Park since June of last year. Occasionally the park delivers up surprises\, like the day in October of 2023 when there were at least four distinct species of Cortinarius all quite close to one another. There isn’t likely to be anything that surprising on Sunday. We are still in the middle of the spring lull\, after all. That said\, we are excited to see what this Sunday will bring. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
