SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, April 27
DESCRIPTION:1100 o100Next Monday’s ID meeting will be online. Share anything you have found recently\, or share older observations for which you haven’t gotten a species ID. Show off mushrooms from your travels\, nearby or abroad. Share your ID triumphs and tribulations. Show your dots on sticks\, jellies\, and crusts. In person ID sessions will begin again later in the spring. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Anne Pringle- Why Are Mushroom Poisonous\, Anyway? (and do the chemistries of death caps and fly agarics explain their invasions?)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 30th\, 7:30 pm\nOn Zoom (Link Below) \nAmanita phalloides (the death cap) is an invasive mushroom. So is Amanita muscaria (the fly agaric). Lately\, my lab has been wondering why so many species of the genus Amanita are stuffed so full of potent specialized metabolites\, and we’ve been asking if chemistry is one mechanism invasive mushrooms use to spread. So far\, we’ve got conflicting stories: As A. muscaria has moved through South Africa\, its metabolites haven’t changed much. (And by the way\, its metabolites seem to kill nematodes and not flies.) By contrast\, gene expression data suggest A. phalloides is using its chemistry in new and interesting ways in its invasive Californian range. At this talk I’ll discuss our lab’s recent publications and hint at where we think this is all going. \nAnne Pringle was born in Kuala Lumpur\, Malaysia\, and spent her childhood traveling through Southeast Asia and West Africa. After completing a Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science Fellowship at the University of California\, Berkeley\, she joined the faculty at Harvard University. She next moved to the University of Wisconsin\, Madison\, where she is now a Vilas Distinguished Achievement and the Mary Herman Rubinstein Professor in the Departments of Botany and Bacteriology\, as well as Chair of the Botany Dept. She has given hundreds of talks to academic and popular audiences in multiple countries and has been awarded the Alexopoulos Prize for a Distinguished Early Career Mycologist\, the Mendelsohn Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Harvard University Graduate Student Council\, the Fannie Cox Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching from Harvard University\, a Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study Fellowship\, the Mid-Career Mycorrhiza Research Excellence Award from the International Mycorrhiza Society\, and a Fulbright U.S. Scholarship (taken to South Africa). Anne’s research focuses on understanding the biodiversity of fungi. Her many papers on invasive mushrooms and lichens bear witness to the changes happening on Earth\, and as a teacher her aim is to draw attention to fungi\, revealing them as ubiquitous and essential species of our landscapes. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. SUMMARY:Free Mushroom Walk + Drawing\, Sat 5/2 at Queens Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sat. May 2 at one of NYC’s hidden gems–the Queens Botanical Garden–to celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month and highlight the importance of mushrooms in Asian and AANHPI culture. This special event features a guided “drop in and draw” mushroom drawing session\, a “discovery” display of mushrooms common in Asian cuisine and medicine\, and a one-hour mini-foray (walk) around the garden and neighborhood to discover the fungi hidden in plain sight in our everyday urban spaces. Walk led by Wilton Rao. Event led by Maya Han. \nDrawing 12 – 2 pm; Garden Walk 1 – 2 pm \nEvent is open to all ages\, all supplies provided\, and beginners are welcome. Free with garden admission. Registration is not required but recommended.
