SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, April 13
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be online. Share anything you have found recently\, or share older observations for which you haven’t gotten a species ID. Show off mushrooms from your travels\, nearby or abroad. Share your ID triumphs and tribulations. Show your dots on sticks\, jellies\, and crusts. In person ID sessions will begin again later in the spring. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:David Rose- The Mushroom Guru of Sligo Road: The Life of Sam Ristich
DESCRIPTION:7:30\, Thursday April 16th\nOn Zoom (Link Below) \nDr. Samuel Ristich (1915-2008) was a beloved figure in the mycological community for nearly four decades. He was born in Pittsburgh\, PA and grew up in a Serbian-American family in Aliquippa. From boyhood he studied bird life and collected insects. He attended Slippery Rock State College and gained his Ph.D. at Cornell University. An entomologist by training and pest control scientist by profession\, Sam forged a unique path in a post-retirement career as an independent scholar and charismatic educator in the study of mushrooms. While best remembered as an educator and mycologist\, Sam was a celestial navigator during World War II\, a civil rights activist\, and discoverer of a bird thought to be extinct for over 300 years. With the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research he helped to lead one of the first environmental studies of the Hudson River. Sam was driven by a passion for teaching the intricacies of biological systems not only to advance critical thinking about nature but for social improvement and environmental conservation. He stimulated the founding of four mycology clubs and is memorialized today by the annual Samuel Ristich Foray of the Northeast Mycological Federation. This illustrated lecture by David Rose will explore Sam’s life in science and nature study. \nDavid Rose is Archivist of the New Rochelle Public Library. He is a writer\, amateur mycologist\, and past president of the Connecticut-Westchester Mycological Association (COMA). His work as an archivist began at the LuEsther T. Mertz Library of the New York Botanical Garden where he organized the papers of world-renown botanists and mycologists including Nathaniel Lord Britton\, Arthur Cronquist\, and Clark Rogerson. As a consulting archivist he has organized the records of the North American Mycological Association and the Charles Horton Peck Papers of the New York State Museum. David is a contributing editor to the journal Fungi; his column “Notes from Underground” has explored “the mycologically strange” with such essays as The Pilzbefallen\, The Stinkhorn Monologue\, Cryptogrammic Cryptogams\, and The Kolyma Psychosis. David is also author of the book Friends and Partners: The Legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Basil O’Connor in the History of Polio.\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. SUMMARY:Andrew Cannon- Smuts\, Mildews\, and Leaf Spots: Fungal Plant Pathogens of New York City
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 17th at 6:30pm\nPier 57 Oyster Classroom\n25 11th Avenue\, NYC \nSmuts\, Mildews\, and Leaf Spots: Fungal Plant Pathogens of New York City \nFollowing his talk on rust fungi for the Mycoconsortium\, Andrew returns to explore other charismatic groups of plant pathogens found across New York City. The city hosts a rich diversity of native and introduced plants\, and with them comes a dazzling array of plant diseases\, each with its own unique life cycle and history. \nThis lecture highlights major groups including smuts\, false smuts\, powdery mildews\, downy mildews\, ergots\, Botrytis and Monilinia molds\, parasitic Dothideomycetes\, and more. \nAndrew Cannon is an artist and amateur mycologist based in New York City. A member of the New York Mycological Society since 2015\, he serves as the Society’s archivist. Since 2023\, he has focused on researching the history and diversity of plant pathogenic fungi in North America\, particularly rusts\, smuts\, and mildews. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Seton Falls Park\, Bronx\, Saturday\, April 18th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Seton Falls Park\, Bronx this Saturday\, April 18th. \nSeton Falls Park is a basin—a park mostly down below street level—so it may retain moisture where other areas are dry. It also has a creek (Rattlesnake Creek) and a waterfall. There are unusual fungi there as well. For an example\, see the Winter/Spring 2022 newsletter for a description and photo of Hygrophorus sp. ‘NY03’\, a mushroom which bears a striking resemblance to Hygrophorus roseobrunneus. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
