SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, March 23
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be online. Share anything you have found recently\, or share older observations for which you haven’t gotten a species ID. Show off mushrooms from your travels\, nearby or abroad. Share your ID triumphs and tribulations. Show your dots on sticks\, jellies\, and crusts. In person ID sessions will begin again later in the spring. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Andrew Cannon- Rust Fungi of the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:7:30pm\, Thursday March 26th\nOn Zoom (Link Below) \nRust fungi (Pucciniales) are highly specialized plant pathogens known for their remarkable life cycles and profound effects on agriculture\, forestry\, and natural ecosystems. The rusts have particularly complicated lifestyles involving a sequence of up to five distinct spore types that often require a jump between two unrelated host plants. \nThis lecture explores the diversity and beauty of rust fungi in the Northeast\, along with practical guidance for finding and identifying them. It will also cover their broader significance: their historical impacts on agriculture and forestry\, the foundational work of early mycologists who documented and classified them\, and their roles as biological control agents and even as weapons of war. \nAndrew Cannon is an artist and amateur mycologist based in New York City. A member of the New York Mycological Society since 2015\, he serves as the Society’s archivist. Since 2023\, he has focused on researching the history and diversity of plant pathogenic fungi in North America\, particularly rusts\, smuts\, and mildews. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Van Cortlandt Park East\, Bronx\, Sunday\, March 29th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Van Cortlandt Park East\, Bronx this Sunday\, March 29th. \nMarch in Van Cortlandt is primarily a season of crusts\, jellies\, ascomycetes and polypores. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website.
