SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, March 16
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be  online. The snow has melted and there are signs of spring. (Did you see Andrew Cannon’s observation of Botrytis galanthina on Snowdrops? A harbinger of spring on a harbinger of spring!) We do not expect to see many large fleshy fungi for a while yet. So at this meeting you can share older observations for which you haven’t gotten a species ID. Show off mushrooms from your travels\, nearby or abroad. Share your ID triumphs and tribulations. Show your dots on sticks\, jellies\, and crusts. In person ID sessions will begin again later in the spring. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Charlie Bruder- The Domestication of Mushrooms and Micro-Fungi
DESCRIPTION:Elinoar Shavit\, who was scheduled to speak to us this coming Thursday has cancelled\, due to illness. \nThursday March 19th at 7:30 EST \nOn Zoom (Link Below) \nMycoConsortium Lecture- The Domestication of Mushrooms and Micro-Fungi \nHow have fungi co-evolved with humans? How might our interest and engagement with fungi shape their evolution\, and how has this impacted human culture throughout history? This talk explores the science of domestication as it applies to both mushrooms and microscopic fungi. Come learn about the important and unexpected roles that fungi have played in agriculture\, and how we might continue to use them today to ensure a more equal and sustainable food system. This will cover both past examples of fungal domestication from many different cultures\, as well as present day examples and the relevance of genetic engineering. \nCharlie Bruder is a microbiologist whose work focuses on fungal evolutionary biology. He is currently based in Corvallis\, Oregon\, where he studies human fungal pathogens and the genetic basis of fungal domestication in the Uehling laboratory at Oregon State University. Originally from Indiana\, Charlie developed a passion for mycology as a teenager while exploring the deciduous woodlands of the Midwest. Outside of research\, he runs a small vegetable farm and hopes to apply permaculture practices to support his community while caring for the Earth. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Alley Pond Park\, Queens\, Sunday\, March 22nd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Alley Pond Park\, Queens this Sunday\, March 22nd. \nWe have only visited Alley Pond Park in March on one previous occasion (2018). What we find in the cool months is mostly ascomycetes\, crusts\, and poroid fungi. With the recent rains it will be interesting to see what we encounter on this walk. In our 2025 research report\, Sigrid Jakob evaluated the fruiting window for three major groups of fleshy mushrooms—Boletes\, Amanita\, and Russula. The earliest date of first fruiting of each of these types of mushroom (May 21st Boletes\, May 21st Amanita\, May 18th Russula) is still several weeks away. First fruiting dates seem to be relatively stable. It is the date of last fruiting which seems to fluctuate year to year. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
