SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, High Rock Park\, Staten Island\, Saturday\, February 21st
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in High Rock Park\, Staten Island this Saturday\, February 21st. \nWithout knowing exactly what conditions on the ground will be for Saturday’s walk\, I would anticipate slippery paths\, mud\, and a fair amount of leftover snow cover. High Rock park has some fairly steep inclines and marshy areas\, so if you plan to come\, please be prepared for all of that. We have visited High Rock Park in February on three previous occasions. On the most recent one in 2023\, Misha Zitser found an ascomycete that was eventually identified as Fracchiaea callista (known as Cucurbitaria callista on iNat). However\, a sequence of the collection does not align with validated sequences in GenBank. What could it be? \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!

SUMMARY:From Waste to Wonder: The Mysterious World of Fungi that Grow on Dung
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, February 22nd 10:00 am EST\nOn Zoom (Link Below) \nGrab your coffee and join Alfred\, Darren and Sigrid for a deep dive into the fascinating world of coprophilous fungi—those that grow on herbivore dung. These fungi are surprisingly diverse\, ecologically important\, and strikingly beautiful. The lecture will feature time-lapse and macro photography to reveal their hidden details\, growth patterns and spore dispersal mechanisms. A wide range of species will be covered\, from well-known genera like Pilobolus and Panaeolus to tiny ascomycetes and evanescent inkcaps. Each speaker will also showcase a few species which are particularly special to them\, including species that are new to science. \nAlphabetically\, our speakers are:\nAlfred Drummond-Herdman\, based in Edinburgh\, studies the often overlooked but ecologically important group that is coprophilous fungi. He uses macro time-lapse photography to reveal this hidden world to a wider audience. He is currently working on various taxonomic projects concerning the Bolbiteaceae and Psathyrellaceae\, including the description of new species and the revision of a genus. \nDarren Gordon is based in Dundee\, Scotland\, and has been studying fungi for the past four years. While he enjoys learning about all types of fungi\, his primary focus is on coprinoids (inkcaps) and coprophilous species. His fascination began when he started incubating herbivore dung and was amazed by the incredible fungi that emerged. Darren particularly enjoys fieldwork – seeking out and identifying fungi in their natural habitats. He also helps manage several social media platforms\, where he assists with identifying species from all over the world. \nSigrid Jakob is a New York City–based amateur mycologist who has studied dung-inhabiting ascomycetes for the past six years. Her work combines field observation\, microscopy\, and DNA sequencing\, with a focus on documenting overlooked fungal diversity in urban and natural habitats. She is particularly interested in species discovery\, taxonomy\, and making specialist knowledge accessible to a broader audience.\nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:Learn how to do fungal DNA sequencing February 22nd in Brooklyn!
DESCRIPTION:NYMS member Sally Kong is running yet another one of our ever popular DNA barcoding workshops where participants will learn how to extract fungal DNA\, amplify it\, perform gel electrophoresis and learn about how to interpret a sequence. \nThe workshop will take place on Sunday February 22nd 2pm to 5pm at in Red Hook\, Brooklyn. \nCost is $10 to cover pipette tips\, tubes\, reagents and Sanger sequencing. \nThis is a hands-on workshop so attendance is very limited. No prior knowledge is required but we hope that attendees will graduate to doing their own extractions and amplifications with the club’s lab. \nIf you are interested please email president@newyorkmyc.org with a short description of why you are interested in doing this workshop. \nAbout Sally Kong\nSally is a software engineer\, artist\, and hobby biologist based in Brooklyn\, New York. For the past six years she’s built software for feature animation and games. Outside of work\, she spends most of her time at the community biology lab Genspace and is currently the lead of the community project Microbial Reef\, exploring the impact of oyster reefs on microbial communities and the biogeochemical cycling in local waterways. Recently\, in collaboration with NYMS she led the Roots of Renewal internship program teaching science\, art\, and sustainability practices to AAPI youth in Sunset Park through the lens of mycelium.
