SUMMARY:Our annual New Years Day pop-up walk\, Central Park\, Thursday\, January 1st
DESCRIPTION:Start the new year with a winter mushroom walk. Join us for our annual New Years Day walk in Central Park Thursday\, January 1st!  \nThe forecast for the day is for temperatures to hover around the freezing point all day. The wind chill will make it feel colder\, so dress accordingly. The good news is that rain and higher temperatures between now and NYD will probably melt the snow on the ground. Please monitor your email in case the forecast changes and we have to cancel the walk. Bring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional). It’s always a good idea to bring water\, but lunch is optional for this walk because knishes and pretzels are easy to forage nearby.  \nOn a last year’s New Years Day walk\, David Hutchinson found a tree root overcome by both the anamorphic and teleomorphic fruiting bodies of what was assumed to be Nectria cinnabarina. However\, once the collection was sequenced\, it was shown to be Nectria dematiosa—a new species for our New York City list. It is one of many new to NYC species that will be featured in our 2025 roundup in the next issue of the NYMS newsletter. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find.
