DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Monday from 6.30 to 8.30 at Sally Kong’s house. Attendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nYou are welcome to bring whatever mushrooms and other fungi you have found recently. Since winter weather is upon us and big mushrooms are scarce\, Monday will also be a great opportunity to brush up your microscopy skills. Monday’s session will be equipped with both dissecting and compound scopes. You can practice making slide mounts with chemical stains. It might even be possible to get some practical experience with spore measurement under the microscope. \nThe address is: \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \n  \nAny train to Barclay’s Center (2\, 3\, 4\, 5\, B\, D\, N\, Q\, and R trains) and then the B61 bus to Van Brunt Verona stop could work.  You can also go to Jay Street metro tech (4\, 5\, A\, C or F) and take the B61 from there.   Possibly a ferry option: Take the South Brooklyn (SB) yellow ferry line to Red Hook Atlantic Basin and then walk a few blocks. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, December 12th at 6:30pm at Sigrid’s apartment; Limited Attendance \nWelcome to the Dark Side: The Fascinating World of Fungi Growing on Dung\nJoin us for a deep dive into the fascinating world of coprophilous fungi – fungi that grow on dung. These fungi are surprisingly diverse\, ecologically important\, and often strikingly beautiful. The lecture will feature macro and time lapse photography to reveal their hidden details\, growth patterns and spore-launching behaviours. A wide range of species will be covered\, from well-known genera like Pilobolus and Panaeolus to tiny ascomycetes\, including species new to science.\n\nAbout our speaker:\nSigrid is a New Yorker with a particular interest in coprophilous fungi and Inocybaceae. She is a former president of the New York Mycological Society\, member of NAMA’s sequencing committee and the Ohio Mushroom DNA lab\, and a board member of FUNDIS. She’s also a co-founder and moderator of the Coprophilous Fungi Facebook group. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Prospect Park\, Brooklyn\, Saturday\, December 13th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Prospect Park\, Brooklyn this Saturday\, December 13th.  \nProspect Park can be hit-or-miss. However\, it has delivered unexpected bounties in the past. I am thinking of a walk last June 28th when dry conditions cast a pall over our activities\, and yet remarkable fungi showed up to the delight of all who attended. Of course\, our present walk will be taking place in a colder season. So who knows what fungi await us.  \nThe leader for this winter walk will be current NYMS member\, but no longer a New Yorker\, Mical Moser\, who along with Sigrid Jakob\, launched our club’s first forays into DNA sequencing in 2017. Sigrid will assist. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find.
