SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday November 17
DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Mondayw16 from 6.30 to 8.30 at Ethan Crenson’s house. Attendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nYou are welcome to bring whatever mushrooms and other fungi you have found recently. Since winter weather is upon us and big mushrooms are scarce\, Monday will also be a great opportunity to brush up your microscopy skills. Monday’s session will be equipped with both dissecting and compound scopes. You can practice making slide mounts with chemical stains. It might even be possible to get some practical experience with spore measurement under the microscope. \nThe address is: \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nBrooklyn\, NY 11215 \nThe nearest subway is the 4th Avenue/9th St station on the F\, R and G lines. \nThere will be microscopes and lots of mushroom books. In person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and chck out what others have found. \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!

SUMMARY:Aubrey Carter - Burn Mushrooms of the Northeast
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 21st at 6:30pm\nPier 57 Oyster Classroom\n25 11th Avenue\, NYC\n(enter through the doors near City Winery and walk down the pier to the Oyster Classroom near the end. See it on a map.) \nEvery spring\, mushroomers from all over the continent flock to the burn sites of western North America to search for fabulous flushes of bodacious burn morels. However\, what happens when fires occur in the eastern part of the continent? What mushrooms appear while the forest is recovering from a burn\, and how do these burns impact the fungal populations of these forests?\n\nThese are questions Aubrey asked himself while working at Manitou Point Preserve\, during an abnormally dry fall in 2024\, while a large wildfire burned a county over in Sterling Forest State Park. This past year he surveyed multiple burns to document the fungi that popped up\, and in addition to compiling other observations from iNaturalist and MushroomObserver\, he researched both the roles these fungi play in the post-fire environment and the potential impact they can have on humanity. Come out on Friday\, 11/21\, to see what’s growing in our burns!\nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Hunter's Island\, Pelham Bay Park\, Bronx\, Saturday\, November 22nd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Hunter’s Island\, Pelham Bay Park\, Bronx this Saturday\, November 22nd. We will be joined by Tom Bigelow\, Juniper Perlis and crust-specialist Emma Richter. Tom and Juniper left the NYMS for the wilds of Maine and are well-known to most diehard NYMS members. Emma Richter\, also a Mainer\, occasionally joins our Zoom ID sessions and is an expert in basidiomycete crusts. \nPelham Bay Park is New York City’s largest park by area. There is an abundance of downed hardwood teeming with saprophytic fungi and a grove of somewhat sickly eastern white pines. The club usually takes its lunch on a picturesque island that is reached by a wooden walkway. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
