SUMMARY:Maria Pinto in conversation with Eugenia Bone at Greenlight Books in Brooklyn
DESCRIPTION:Maria Pinto\, who delivered a riveting lecture to NYMS in 2023\, returns to New York in support of her new book Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment\, Poison\, Ecology\, Hidden Histories\, Zombies\, and Black Survival. The event takes place at Greenlight Bookstore where former NYMS president Eugenia Bone will join Maria Pinto in conversation and Q & A. Read more about the book below. \nMonday\, November 3rd – 7:30pm – 8:30pm\nGreenlight Bookstore\n686 Fulton Street\nBrooklyn\, NY 11217 \nWriter\, educator\, and mycophile Maria Pinto presents Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless\, a stunning debut that uncovers strange and beautiful fungal connections between the natural and human worlds. Mingling reportage\, research\, memoir\, and nature writing\, Pinto brings a new perspective and a distinctive literary voice to this mix of environmental and lived history—ranging from Black farmers’ domestication of the unforgettable aroma of truffles to the possibility that enslaved people wielded mycological poisons against their enslavers. With “echoes of Jamaica Kincaid and Annie Dillard” (Publishers Weekly)\, every page of Pinto’s work sings with her enthusiasm for the networks in which we are embedded: fungal\, ecological\, ancestral\, and communal. Internationally known food and nature writer Eugenia Bone joins Pinto for a reading and discussion\, before an audience Q&A.

SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Tuesday November 5
DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Tueday\, November 5 from 6.30 to 8.30 at Ethan Crenson’s house. Attendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nYou are welcome to bring whatever mushrooms and other fungi you have found recently. Since winter weather is upon us and big mushrooms are scarce\, Monday will also be a great opportunity to brush up your microscopy skills. Monday’s session will be equipped with both dissecting and compound scopes. You can practice making slide mounts with chemical stains. It might even be possible to get some practical experience with spore measurement under the microscope. \nThe address is: \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nBrooklyn\, NY 11215 \nThe nearest subway is the 4th Avenue/9th St station on the F\, R and G lines. \nThere will be microscopes and lots of mushroom books. In person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and chck out what others have found. \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!
