SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, October 13
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be  online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others \nhave found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Special free myco-screening Tues. 10/14 to celebrate Indigenous People's Day + Hispanic Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Indigenous People’s Day (10/13)+ Hispanic Heritage Month (ends 10/15)\, NYMS is excited to present a very special free pop-up screening of the extremely rare 1978 ethnographic documentary\, Maria Sabina\, Mujer Espiritu\, by Nicolás Echevarria\, to commemorate the rich and expansive mycological contributions of Indigenous and Hispanic cultures! Sabina was the Mexican myco-shaman and Mazatec sabia (wise woman) and poet in Oaxaca who introduced psilocybin to the West\, was pivotal to the 60s psychedelic movement\, and was\, by many accounts\, exploited and forgotten. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to get a glimpse of her story in her own words. Trailer here. \nPlease join us for this screening on Tues. 10/14\, 6-8pm in Ridgewood NY at one of our favorite microbreweries — Evil Twin is a beautiful space\, more like a greenhouse than a bar\, conveniently located next to the Halsey L station. They do not serve food so you are welcome to bring your own (myco) food or snacks! Free but RSVP required here. Guests and non-members with a genuine interest in the film subject are all welcome. We kindly request that during the screening attendees respectfully refrain from loud talking or go outside for extended conversations. \nSpecial thanks to Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía for generously providing this film to NYMS.\nEmail Maya Han at culture@newyorkmyc.org if questions.

SUMMARY:Scoping Out Trees and Mushrooms with Hunters Point Parks Conservancy

It’s the perfect time to enjoy the end of the mushroom fruiting season\, as well as kick-off winter tree pruning season\, the ideal time to harvest wood for mushroom log cultivation! \nThere are 5 walk leaders confirmed – from the New York Mycological Society: Andrew Cannon\, rust fungi enthusiast; and Zihao Wang\, naturalist. Together we will survey Hunters Point Park and Gantry Plaza State Park\, identify the diversity of soils\, trees\, plants\, fungi and lichen\, and learn about the local ecology. \nThe walk will culminate at the Queens Landing Boathouse and Environmental Center at 2 PM\, where we will discuss our observations and look at collected specimens under the macro- and microscopes! \nThe walk and microscopy sessions are open to all ages and experience levels. \nSchedule\n1 – 2 PM Hunters Point South Park & Gantry Plaza State Park Foray\n2 – 3 PM Queens Landing Boathouse & Environmental Center Microscopy session \nThis event requires registration.
