SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday August 18
DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Monday\, August 18 from 6.30 to 8.30 at Ethan Crenson’s house. Attendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nYou are welcome to bring whatever mushrooms and other fungi you have found recently. Since winter weather is upon us and big mushrooms are scarce\, Monday will also be a great opportunity to brush up your microscopy skills. Monday’s session will be equipped with both dissecting and compound scopes. You can practice making slide mounts with chemical stains. It might even be possible to get some practical experience with spore measurement under the microscope. \nThe address is: \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nBrooklyn\, NY 11215 \nThe nearest subway is the 4th Avenue/9th St station on the F\, R and G lines. \nThere will be microscopes and lots of mushroom books. In person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and chck out what others have found. \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!

SUMMARY:Learn how to do fungal DNA sequencing Saturday\, September 6th!
DESCRIPTION:Join Ethan Crenson for a fungal DNA sequencing workshop on Saturday\, September 6th at 11AM. \nThe 4 hour workshop will take place at Ethan’s place in Park Slope\, Brooklyn. \nCost is $10 to cover pipette tips\, tubes\, reagents\, primers\, and Sanger sequencing. \nThis is a hands-on workshops so attendance is very limited. No prior knowledge is required. You will be able to bring up to 3 of your own samples to sequence. Or you can ‘borrow’ samples if you don’t have any of your own. \nIf you are interested please email president@newyorkmyc.org with a short description of why you are interested in doing this workshop.

SUMMARY:Beech Brook\, Passaic Co.\, NJ - Saturday\, August 23rd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Beech Brook\, Passaic County\, NJ\, Saturday\, August 23rd. Beech Brook is home to an undescribed species of Earth Tongue\, provisionally named Microglossum “rufum-NC01”\, which was first detected in the park by Mushroom Hunter Ming in 2023. \nAs always\, if the forecast changes for the very bad\, we might shift the walk to a different day or cancel it. So please monitor your email. Bring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nTicks and mosquitos are common in this park so you will want to be prepared for those as well.\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nWe look forward to seeing you there!
