SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, August 11
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be  online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others \nhave found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook\, Rockland County - Saturday\, August 16th
DESCRIPTION:We return for our second visit to Stony Brook\, Saturday August 16th. Stony Brook is located within Harriman State Park\, NY. Last year on our walk in Stony Brook\, Claviceps purpurea\, the fungus which may have sparked the Salem Witch Trials and that certainly led to the development of LSD\, was found at the trailhead on meadow fescue (Lolium pratense). \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will postpone or cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThis location is known to have ticks and mosquitos\, so you will want to be well covered in insect repellent.\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Cullen Taylor Clark: Africa's Untold Fungal Story: Ethnomycology\, Ritual\, and Healing in Southern Africa
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 17th\, 12pm\nOn Zoom (link below and in the left column) \nThere is an untold story of fungi woven into the fabric of Southern Africa – a legacy of reverence\, ritual\, and healing that stretches back thousands of years and has\, until recently\, remained undocumented.\n\nIn this talk\, ethnomycologist Cullen Taylor Clark shares groundbreaking insights from over five years of fieldwork across Southern Africa. Drawing from thousands of kilometres of travel and in-depth interviews with traditional healers\, diviners\, and elders\, Cullen reveals a living archive of fungal knowledge. \nThis exploration uncovers: \n\nIndigenous knowledge systems surrounding sacred and medicinal mushrooms\nThe role of fungi in ritual initiation\, healing ceremonies\, and divination\nAncient rock art\, oral histories\, and spiritual practices pointing to mushroom use\nThe cultural and ecological importance of endemic fungi such as Psilocybe\, Ganoderma\, Truffles\, Termitomyces\, and more\nThe broader implications of reclaiming and preserving African ethnomycological heritage as we look to psychedelics as a treatment to cognitive disorders\n\nThis is not just a talk – it is a restoration of memory and an invitation to engage with a part of Africa’s living culture that has long been hidden in plain sight. \nAbout our Speaker: Cullen Taylor Clark is an ethnomycologist\, researcher\, and co-founder of Aether Apothecary\, one of South Africa’s leading bioceutical manufacturers focused on sustainable\, science-driven natural medicine. Through Aether\, Cullen has helped bring production of natural medicine back to South Africa\, creating jobs\, building regenerative local supply chains\, and pioneering clean\, transparent\, and effective bioceutical extractions. \nFor the past five years\, Cullen has led The Lost Muti project\, a groundbreaking ethnomycological initiative uncovering the ancient\, undocumented use of fungi across Southern Africa’s indigenous cultures. Working under government-issued bioprospecting and psilocybin research permits\, and in collaboration with Free State and Stellenbosch Universities\, his research is bridging academic science and traditional knowledge in a way never before done on the continent. \nHis peer-reviewed works both published and in review have garnered international attention\, and he has since lectured to thousands of people globally\, including at institutions like the The UK psychedelic Society\, MENSA\, and various global ethnobotanical forums. He’s been interviewed by leading publications\, including Forbes Africa and Longevity Magazine\, and featured on top-tier podcasts such as Hamilton Morris\, Mushroom Revival\, Mycopreneur\, and The Fungi Academy. \nAt the heart of all his work is a deep reverence for the natural world and the people who have safeguarded its secrets. With integrity\, curiosity\, and purpose as his compass\, Cullen’s trying to redefine the way fungi are understood – not only as medicines or organisms but as sacred cultural allies woven into the spiritual and healing traditions of his homeland of South Africa. \n\nLinks: \n\nPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/cullentaylorclark\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/cullentaylorclark/\nWebsite: https://www.lostmuti.com\nYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCzwuN77YEg\n\n\n\nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in.
