SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday August 4
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will take place from 6.30 to 8.30 at Paul Sadowski’s apartment in Chelsea\, Manhattan. \nAttendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nIn person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nThe address is 236 West 26th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues)\, Manhattan. The buzzer is labelled Jordan Family 1101. Once in the lobby\, go to the last of the the three elevators\, the freight elevator\, Paul will then send the elevator up. \nClosest public transit are the 1 train (23rd & 28th Street stations)\, C and E trains (23rd Street Station) and M20 and M7 buses. \nWe encourage you to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City.\nFungi Beyond New York City.\nSlime Molds of New York City.

SUMMARY:Bethany Beech: Caps Off the Milkies: A Look at the Subgenera and Sections of Lactarius and Lactifluus
DESCRIPTION:Lactarius and Lactifluus\, the milk caps\, are notoriously hard to identify. In talk\, we’ll go beyond species ID and learn the broader characteristics of the subgenera and sections of the milk caps\, plus a history of how we got to these divisions. Learning higher order taxonomy is a gateway to useful information such as edibility and can help you narrow down your finds in the field without the use of a microscope. \nAbout our Speaker: Bethany Beech is an amateur mycologist from New York City with a particular interest in Lactarius and Lactifluus mushrooms. Over the past five years\,  she found herself seeking more information about the taxonomy of these notoriously complicated genera. Unable to find satisfying answers in books and papers\, her quest led her to learn DNA sequencing and to stumble upon many undescribed species. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:Manitou Point Preserve\, Putnam County - Saturday August 9th.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Manitou Point Preserve\, Saturday August\, 9th! Manitou is located near Garrison\, NY. It is home to the pretty pinkish polypore\, Fomitopsis cajanderi. See if you can spot it on the walk. \nIn the event of a very bad weather forecast\, we may have to cancel this walk or shift it to another day. So please monitor your email before the walk in case we do. Bring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nBecause there are ticks and mosquitos at this location\, insect repellent is recommended.\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n \nWe look forward to seeing you there!
