SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, June 30
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be  online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others \nhave found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:You're invited to an in-person talk on DNA sequencing at the Central Park Arsenal on July 3 6pm!
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Spore Print: DNA Sequencing and the True Fungal Diversity of New York\nThe talk: Join us for an enlightening exploration of how cutting-edge DNA sequencing technology is changing our understanding of New York’s fungal kingdom. This presentation will introduce the process of DNA sequencing\, and guide you through the fascinating journey from a mushroom collected in the field all the way to its permanent home in a herbarium. The talk will showcase many rare and potentially new fungal species that have been identified in our region thanks to DNA barcoding. You’ll learn about the challenges of identifying sequenced specimens to species and the passionate communities within NYMS and beyond driving this research. The talk will also cover the many applications of this powerful genetic data\, from conservation efforts to unraveling ecological mysteries. No prior experience with DNA sequencing is required; just an eagerness to learn about the incredible biodiversity surrounding us. \nThe speaker: Sigrid Jakob has been sequencing New York City’s fungi since 2019 with her home lab and has led many workshops to introduce NYMS members to that world. She is also a sequence validator for the Ohio Mushroom DNA Lab and Mycota Lab. \nLocation: We’re back at the Central Park Arsenal – a beautiful building in Central Park. It’s located at 830 5th Ave\, New York\, NY 10065\, at the level of 64th Street on the East side of the park. It’s a short walk from the 5th Avenue and 59th Street N\, R and W station or the 4\, 5 and 6 train station at 59th Street. You can also easily get there by the N\, Q\, R and F trains at 63rd Street station. \nThe lecture will start at 6pm \nThe event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

SUMMARY:Mushrooms 101—a LECTURE and WALK\, Saturday\, July 5th & Sunday July 6th
DESCRIPTION:A pair of events—a lecture and a walk— designed for absolute beginners are planned for Saturday\, July 5th and Sunday July 6th. \nOn Saturday\, join NYMS president Ethan Crenson for a zoom lecture entitled Mushrooms 101: An introduction to collecting and identifying fungi. \nThe summer mushroom season is upon us. Now is the perfect time to learn how to identify common fungi of the Northeast. This lecture and walk are aimed at beginners and will cover tools and terminology\, the basics of identifying fungi. The lecture takes place on Zoom on Saturday morning at 11am. \nOn Sunday at 10am\, come to Cunningham Park\, Queens to put into practice what you learned in the zoom lecture. \nSunday’s walk will also be for beginners. It will start with a brief demonstration of how to make a quality observation on iNaturalist using your smartphone in the field. Then we will walk the paths in Cunningham Park looking for summer mushrooms on which to use the mushroom identification skills covered in the lecture. Mushroom pros are welcome to attend this walk\, but please come prepared to educate! \nThis event is in collaboration with the LES Ecology Center. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. To watch this video\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at lecture and the walk!
