SUMMARY:Come join us for an in-person ID meeting this Monday June 23
DESCRIPTION:Our next ID meeting will take place on Monday\, June 23 from 6.30 to 8.30 at Sigrid Jacob’s apartment in South Slope/Greenwood Heights. \nAttendees can of course arrive later and leave earlier. \nPlease bring any interesting specimens regardless of whether you have identified them or not\, and check out what others have found. \nThe address is: \nThe address is 259 21st Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues) Apartment 3J\, Brooklyn. Buzz\, take the elevator to the third floor and make a right. \nClosest public transit is the Prospect Avenue station on the R train. The B63 bus stops at the bottom of the block. \nThere will be microscopes and lots of mushroom books. In person ID meetings are a great way of developing your hands-on identification skills and dipping your toes into microscopy! \nWe continue to encourage members to use iNaturalist – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday!

SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Prospect Park\, Brooklyn\, Saturday\, June 28th—early start time
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Prospect Park\, Brooklyn this Saturday\, June 28th. Note the walk begins earlier than usual. \nMycorrhizal mushrooms are not abundant in Prospect Park—as an example: there have only been 10 species of boletes observed on our walks in the park. (Compare that to the 36 from Wolfe’s Pond Park). When Gary Lincoff launched the Bolete Patrol initiative in 2017\, he pointed out that at the time there was only one species of bolete in Prospect Park on our lists—a single Xerocomellus chrysenteron collected in 2011. It’s not that the boletes don’t grow in Prospect Park. By finding another 9 species on walks since 2017\, we have proved that. The fact is\, we don’t often visit the park during bolete season. Observer bias was one of the problems that Gary was trying to correct when he started Bolete Patrol. It is also a near certainty that had Gary not launched Bolete Patrol we never would have found the only ascomycete truffle (see above) ever recorded in New York City (discounting\, of course\, the ones in gourmet grocery stores). \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk or shift it to another day. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nTicks\, mosquitoes and poison ivy abound in many New York City parks. Ticks in particular can transmit a host of fairly serious diseases. We recommend insect repellent\, sun screen\, long pants\, and closed toe shoes. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
