SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, May 19
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be  online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others \nhave found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Mammals\, Truffles\, and Trees: Linking Above- and Below-ground Interactions — a lecture by Ryan Stephens
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 22nd\, 7:30 pm\nMany fungal taxa have evolved to fruit belowground (truffles) and require animals\, particularly small mammals\, to consume and disperse spores. This is a key mutualistic interaction where in exchange for providing spore dispersal\, small mammals get an important food source. Focusing on communities from the Northeastern and Midwestern USA\, this talk will discuss the factors that shape the interactions between truffles and small mammals\, and the drivers of mammal-mediated fungal spore dispersal across spatial scales\, including the role of predators as secondary dispersers. \nRyan Stephens is an assistant professor at East Tennessee State University in the Department of Biology. Ryan earned his PhD in Earth and Environmental Science at UNH in 2018. He studies how habitat associations\, resource availability\, and biotic interactions influence the dietary niche of mammals and their functional roles in forested systems as dispersers of mycorrhizal fungi.\nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Van Cortlandt Park West\, Bronx\, Saturday\, May 24th—early start time.
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Van Cortlandt Park West\, Bronx this Saturday\, May 24th. Please note the earlier-than-usual start time. \nVan Cortlandt Park is one of New York’s largest parks\, but it is split into sections by a spaghetti of highways. The section on the west side is dominated by vast athletic fields. However\, the nearby woods and wetlands often host unusual mushrooms. For instance\, during our visit last July\, Karly W. spotted a saw-gilled mushroom\, Neolentinus lepideus (we thought)\, growing from a manufactured wood beam. When it was later sequenced at Ohio Mushroom DNA Lab\, it turned out to be the west coast species Neolentinus ponderosus. How did it get here? It probably hitched a ride on that beam. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The club is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
