SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, April 28
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be  online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others \nhave found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Beginning Microscopy Workshop - the Microscope Demystified
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a workshop to introduce our members to the compound microscope. We hope to have ten microscopes\, supplies\, dried and fresh material to examine\, and a number of our experienced microscopists to help the students along. \nVery often the prospect of taking up a new technical challenge can be daunting. The purpose of this workshop is to get the prospective microscopist over the proverbial hump. \nThe class will feature a short introduction to optics and the mechanical workings of the microscope. We will then move on to the preparation of specimens for examination\, moving through slime molds\, agarics\, a few ascomycetes\, and some polypores. \nThere is no admission fee. Space is limited and these workshops tend to fill up very quickly.\nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar.

SUMMARY:Jacob Heilmann-Clausen: Combining Citizen Science\, Traditional Taxonomy and Barcoding to Expand Knowledge on Fungal Biodiversity in Denmark – and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 4th\, 11am \n  \nThe Danish Fungal Atlas\, began in 2009 as a citizen science project bridging amateur and professional mycology in Denmark. The project has collected over 1.2 million records of fungi in Denmark\, which have been widely used for both research and nature conservation planning. The project utilizes innovative tools for enhancing data quality and helping volunteers contribute\, including unique data validation algorithms\, AI based species identification tools and next generation sequencing. Lately several aspects of these efforts have been expanded to the European scale in the FunDive project\, which currently connects citizen scientists and academics researchers across more than 20 countries in Europe. \nVisit the Danish Fungal Atlas website: https://svampe.databasen.org/ \n  \nJacob Heilmann-Clausen has a PhD in forest ecology from University of Copenhagen\, 2004\, with a focus on community ecology and conservation of fungi growing on dead wood. He has considerable experience from practical nature management and now holds a position as Assoc. Professor at the Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen\, Denmark. Here he works in conservation\, restoration ecology\, biodiversity monitoring\, and fungal macroecology. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in.
