SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, March 24
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others \nhave found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related.\nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Donald Pfister - Fungaria and the MycoPortal
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 27th\, 7:30pm EDT \nFungaria are central to the study of fungi. They provide the physical evidence needed to describe a species morphologically; in many cases DNA sequences can be obtained from deposited material. The importance of depositing specimens in phylogenetic and genomic studies is essential. In this talk I will outline the general use and guidelines practiced in the administration of fungaria and how this relates to databases and Mycoportal in particular. Examples of how database information can enhance mycological studies. One can ask\, how do you know if a particular fungus has been collected in a location before? Can one determine if a fungus is rare? How do we know if a particular collector could have been in the right place to have collected a particular sample? Each specimen tells a unique story. We will delve into some of those stories. \nDon Pfister is Harvard’s Asa Gray Research Professor of Systematic Botany and Curator Emeritus of the Farlow Library and Herbarium/Fungarium. At Harvard he served in many roles including Faculty Dean at Kirkland House\, Dean of the Harvard Summer School\, Interim Dean of Harvard College and Director of the Harvard University Herbaria. He has taught courses ranging from the biology of fungi to plants used by people to forests and climate change\, while his research has focused on the classification and diversity of fungi\, history of collections and collectors of biological materials. His field work has taken him to many regions around the world\, most recently southern South America; Patagonia and espiciallyTierra del Fuego. He has also been the generous and greatly appreciated scientific sponsor of the Boston Mycological Club for as long as we can remember. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Van Cortlandt Park East\, Bronx\, Saturday\, March 29th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Van Cortlandt Park East\, Bronx this Saturday\, March 29th. \nVan Cortlandt Park has always been a favorite for the NYMS to visit all year round\, but especially in the cooler months. The park is large and home to several micro-habitats. Sizable stands of Eastern White Pine are found near our starting point. Hickory trees are hidden in corners of the park\, some of which bear the substrate for the rare pyrenomycete Melanomma caryophagum (caryophagum lit. Hickory eater). The mycorrhizal crust Tulasnella violea is found in the park as well. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. The NYMS is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. Dress for the weather. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

SUMMARY:Mushroom Cultivation Demo: Making Spawn for Log Inoculation
DESCRIPTION:Learn the fundamentals of mushroom propagation in this demonstration lab session. We’ll review the essentials for: \n\nsterile lab technique\nDIY mycology equipment\ncloning mushrooms to create starter cultures\ncreating liquid culture spawn\nsawdust spawn development for inoculating logs to grow mushrooms outside\n\nIn-person participants will leave with a cloned mushroom sample and a liquid culture syringe of their chosen species. \nNo prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a love for fungi!

SUMMARY:Join us for Myco Book Club: Mycocosmic by Lesley Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:**12/2025 UPDATE: Please join Lesley Wheeler on 12/18/2025 at 8PM ET for her virtual presentation and book club discussion of Mycocosmic\, presented by NAMA. Free for NAMA members. Register here.** \n*10/2025 UPDATE: Review of Mycocosmic available in Fall 2025 NYMS newsletter* \nJoin us on for our next Myco Book Club discussion as we dive into a marvelous new tome of poetry\, Mycocosmic by Lesley Wheeler (available on Kindle starting 2/26/2025\, at the publisher\, or at your local NYC independent bookstores!) \nWhen:  Sat. 3/29*\, 3-5pm (Rain date 3/30.) \nWhere: Elizabeth Street Garden \nWhat:  BYOB(ook + Beverage) + snack of choice \nMycocosmic offers intricately woven spell poems—prayers\, hexes\, charms\, and invocations—that call for transformation. A parent’s death gives Wheeler the freedom to reveal difficult truths about family violence and her sexuality; a midlife mental health crisis transforms her sense of self. Incantatory language channeled through a wide variety of forms—including free verse\, litany\, sonnets\, the bref double\, the golden shovel\, and the villanelle—empowers these shifts. As Merlin Sheldrake writes in Entangled Life\, “Mycelium describes the most common of fungal habits\, better thought of not as a thing but as a process: an exploratory\, irregular tendency.” Poetry is rooted in real and imagined communities and conversations. Mycocosmic demonstrates how interdependence binds us together. \nSeating is limited so please email Maya Han (Myco Book Club founder and organizer) at culture@newyorkmyc.org to RSVP or if any questions. \n——————————————– \n\nUPCOMING MYCO BOOK CLUB EVENTS:\n\n11/2025: Maria Pinto\, Fearless\, Sleepless\, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment\, Poison\, Ecology\, Hidden Histories\, Zombies\, and Black Survival (discussion with Eugenia Bone with author reading + signing)\n4/2025: Eugenia Bone\, Have a Good Trip\n3/2025: Lesley Wheeler\, Mycocosmic
