SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, March 10
DESCRIPTION:Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian - Outcasts: Mary Banning's World of Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 13th\, 7:30pm \nMary Elizabeth Banning (1822-1903) was one of the first American mycologists. She was a talented\, self-taught scientist who studied mushrooms in Maryland in the mid-1800s. Banning was one of the first women to describe new species of fungi to science. Throughout her life\, she produced scientific descriptions\, beautiful illustrations\, and rich narratives about her fungal encounters. On account of her gender\, however\, Banning’s work and talent went under appreciated in her lifetime\, and her name was lost to obscurity for almost a century. This talk will celebrate her contribution to science and mycology through an exploration of her illustrations\, taxonomic work\, and story-telling\, drawing from the collections at the New York State Museum.  \nDr. Patricia Ononiwu Kaishian is the Curator of Mycology at the New York State Museum\, and a professor of biology with Bard Prison Initiative. Her research focuses on fungal taxonomy\, diversity and evolution\, as well as queer theory and philosophy of science. Her forthcoming book (May 2025)\, Forest Euphoria: The Abounding Queerness of Nature\, is a collection of essays challenging our expectations of what is normal\, beautiful\, and possible. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. DESCRIPTION:NYMS 2025 Winter Banquet will be at New Phoenix Seafood Restaurant (Sunset Park) \nThe New York Mycological Society will be having its annual wintertime banquet on Sunday\, March 16. It will be at New Phoenix Seafood Restaurant (formerly known as Affable Eatery)\, in Brooklyn’s Chinatown. It’s a large Cantonese restaurant that is well known for its dim sum and seafood dishes. \nOur banquet organizer\, Dennis Aita\, has chosen a mostly mushroom menu with some seafood and plenty of vegetables. Also there is one beef dish with mushrooms\, of course. One dish with no mushrooms is our soup. Our soup will have fish maw (the swim bladder of large fish)\, a Chinese delicacy that is highly regarded in Cantonese cuisine\, more for its texture than its taste. \nSelected Menu Included with the Ticket: \nSeafood \n\nCrab Meat with Fish Maw Soup\nFried Squid with Prince Mushroom in XO Sauce\nCrab Meat with Mushrooms and Broccoli\n\n“Vegetarian” (cooked with chicken stock) \n\nAssorted Mushrooms with Egg Tofu\nBuddhist Delight with Bamboo Fungus\nChinese Broccoli with Chinese Liquor\nBamboo Fungus with Special Sauce\nBraised E—Fu Noodle with Chinese Black Mushrooms and Chinese Vegetables\n\nMeat \n\nBeef with Mushrooms and Bamboo Shoots\n\nAnd \n\nRice\nChrysanthemum Flower Tea\n\nWe will have large round tables that comfortably seat 10 (some tables may even have 9). If your group is on the large size it is imperative that you get there early if you want your group to sit together! Members can bring up to 2 non-member guests ($10 extra fee for each non-member guest)\, so if you are purchasing tickets for yourself or anyone who is an NYMS member\, please select the “Banquet with the Standard Menu (NYMS members)” tickets for $47. For non-member guests\, be sure to select “Banquet with the Standard Menu (non-NYMS members)“. \nFor the vegetarians/vegans and others with special diets: \nChinese restaurants in general use chicken stock in many of their sauces. For the vegetarians and vegans this restaurant will use a Cantonese Vegan “Oyster Flavored” sauce that contains mushrooms. For those who would prefer not to partake in the standard menu (above)\, the restaurant will set aside tables for vegetarians. At these tables\, vegetarians will choose dishes from the menu and pay after the meal separately. Vegetarians eating separately\, please select “Food Not Included: purchasing food separately” tickets. \nThe restaurant only serves Heineken and Corona beer at a cost of $4 each (not included in this ticket\, pay separately with cash). We can bring our own wine (no corkage fees) and any spirits that you like! There will be 2 large bottles of free soda and ice on the tables. They only provide large water glasses. So don’t hesitate to bring your own wine glasses\, etc. if you want. \nPlease\, please come prepared to pay with cash for drinks (beer) and for meals if you are seated at the vegetarian tables!! \nCancellation Policy: 5 days before the event. \nThe deadline to purchase tickets for this banquet is Tuesday\, March 11th at 11:30PM.
