SUMMARY:Come join us for an online ID meeting this Monday\, February 17
DESCRIPTION:W16Next Monday’s ID meeting will be happening online. \nCome share what you’ve found\, see what others have found or to ask more general questions about anything fungi-related. \nAs always\, we encourage you to use iNaturalist to share your observations – it’s a great way to keep track of your finds\, and you will be able to participate in these two NYMS projects: \n\nFungi of New York City\nFungi Beyond New York City\nSlime Molds of New York City\n\nIf you’re not using iNaturalist\, try to have images on your computer that you can share. \nEither way\, it’s important to document your finds with clear pictures\, showing details of cap\, underside and stem\, and to note the habitat \nAll members are welcome to join – especially new members! We will try to make it as easy as possible for everyone and are eager to assist\, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Madeline DeDe-Panken - 19th-Century Field Fights: How The Rise of Popular Mycology Made Foraging White
DESCRIPTION:February 20th\, 7:30 pm \nMadeline DeDe-Panken will discuss the rise of popular mycology in America at the turn of the twentieth century\, focusing on cultural clashes over what (and whose) knowledge was judged trustworthy for safe mushroom foraging. \nEchoing current mycophilia\, beginning in the 1880s\, the culinary\, intellectual and personal benefits of mushroom hunting drew new populations to the field\, revitalizing an ancient practice through popular science. These early mycophiles refashioned foraging into a science-minded middle-class pastime. Yet their approach stifled more traditional forms of knowledge\, denigrating long-held customs among marginalized communities including indigenous groups and Italian and Eastern European immigrants. In the process\, the competent forager became typified by whiteness and affluence\, fueling exclusion in outdoor pursuits that we are still unraveling the impacts of today. Ultimately\, this talk considers ideas about “correct” land use and foodways which continue to shape our relationship with the natural world and its offerings. \nMadeline DeDe-Panken is a PhD Candidate in US History at The Graduate Center at the City University of New York. Her research explores the rise of popular mycology at the turn of the twentieth century\, particularly focusing on women’s roles in foraging culture and public science. Madeline has held fellowships at institutions including the New York Botanical Garden and New-York Historical Society. She lives in Somerville\, MA where she is a member of the Boston Mycological Club and works at The Mushroom Shop helping people take full advantage of culinary varieties. \nThis lecture was recorded and is viewable to active members who are logged in. SUMMARY:NYMS pop-up walk\, Inwood Hill Park\, Manhattan\, Sunday\, February 23rd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk in Inwood Hill Park\, Manhattan this Sunday\, February 23rd. \nAs you might have seen in our 2025 NYC Diversity Report\, Inwood Hill Park is one of our better surveyed parks where we have identified 375 taxa. Because it is February\, we won’t be seeing most of them. But we could come across some interesting crusts\, ascomycetes\, jellies\, polypores\, slime molds\, and lichens. On previous cold weather walks\, notable observations include Orbilia xanthostigma\, Dentocorticium portoricense\, and a Podoscypha sp. which we hope to identify through sequencing. \nBring paper bags for collecting specimens\, a hand lens\, a knife\, a tackle box (optional)\, water and a lunch. Dress for the weather. The NYMS is fairly all-weather\, but if the forecast takes a particularly nasty turn\, we will cancel this walk. Please monitor your email in case we do. \nWe highly recommend using the iNaturalist app (IOS\, Android) to document the fungi you find. Find out how to use it here. \nIf you’ve never been on a mushroom walk with us before\, here is what to expect. \nThe event details are only viewable to active members who are logged into the website. To view details of the event\, please use the login form in the left sidebar. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at the walk!
